We use the app Slack for our Helpline. Students can chat with tutors in real time, ask questions, and get feedback in a space that feels like texting a friend.
Examples of unsuitable questions:
-
“Can you go over Unit 3: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration?” (too broad, multiple concepts)
-
"Can you help me build an outline for my upcoming English essay?" (appropriate for a live session)
-
"Can you write an example conclusion for my essay?" (risks academic integrity and too broad)
-
"Can you solve the problems on this worksheet so we can compare answers?" (too many questions)
HELPLINE QUESTION GUIDELINES
-
Questions should be specific and limited to a single concept or problem.
-
For multi-part problems, please submit each part as a separate question.
-
We reserve the right to decline a question if it is not suitable for a message-based format and recommend an office hour or private tutoring session. This will maximize both the time of our tutors and yourself.
Examples of suitable questions:
-
“What’s the difference between meiosis and mitosis?”
-
“Can you explain how to find the derivative of √x using the power rule?”
-
“I don’t get how to balance this redox reaction: Fe²⁺ + MnO₄⁻ → Fe³⁺ + Mn²⁺”
-
“I solved this problem, but I’m not sure if my logic in step 3 is correct. Can you check it?”
-
"Which rhetorical device is being used in this sentence?"
-
"Is this thesis statement detailed and clear?"
